Tip #3: View Your Credit Report

What you don't know about your own credit, someone else may have already found out. Stop now and get a copy of your credit report, before it becomes your credit autopsy.

Tips on Getting Your Free Credit Report

Tip 1: Watch your spelling if you type in the web address (rather than a click on the link) -- many of the bogus free report sites are just one letter away from the site you want.

Tip 2: Space out your free credit reports from each of the 3 credit bureaus over the year. This will allow you to see changes that occur over time.

Tip 3: Print or download your credit report(s) immediately. You may not be able to gain access again for free later.

Tip 4: After you get your credit report, quit your browser so no one else can access it.

The Right Way to View Your Credit Report

Don’t fall for companies that advertise getting your credit report for you and then want to charge a fee for extra .

Here is the official website sponsored by the three major credit bureaus:

www.AnnualCreditReport.com

This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Fight identity theft by monitoring and reviewing your credit report. You may request your free credit report online, by phone or through the mail. Free credit reports requested online are viewable immediately upon authentication of your identity. Requests via phone or mail are processed within 15 days of receiving your request.

How to Opt Out of Credit Card Offers

The fewer offers that arrive in your mailbox, the fewer opportunities for identity thieves to exploit them.

Call 888-567-8688 (888-5-OPT-OUT) from your home telephone (so it can be checked against an address database) or visit:

www.OptOutPrescreen.com

to stop pre-approved credit card and insurance offers from reaching you by mail or phone.

Note: They will ask for your Social Security number, for your own protection.
